The rhythmic thump-thump-thump of the dog's paws on the pavement across the street amplified her own racing pulse. Sarah gripped the steering wheel, knuckles white. She had already been late.

The dog, a small terrier mix, was heading straight for her yard. She sighed, her chest tight. This was the third time this week.

"Not today, you little…," she whispered, her voice barely audible. She put the car in park and unbuckled her seatbelt with a snap, feeling the familiar prickle of irritation.
